Has Nike+ FuelBand changed Jumpwire Media?

It’s been 3 months since everyone at Jumpwire Media started using Nike+ FuelBand. Now the question is, are we all in better shape because we’ve been tracking our movement, or are we all just more aware of the fact that we are not very active?

Let’s dive into the data.

I’ll preface this data by saying that we all at Jumpwire are your typical office workers, we spend 10+ hours a day sitting in an office, working on computers and most of our activity comes from commuting to and from work.

Here’s what a month with Nike+ FuelBand looks like for me, a 18-24 year old male.

I hit my goal of 2,000 Nike Fuel a mere 6 times in the month. You’ll notice that generally my activity tends to trend downward during the workweek, and it picks up somewhat on the weekends.

But how does this stack up against other 18-24 year old males, and other Nike+ FuelBand users?
This graph shows my average daily Nike Fuel compared to other 18-24 year old males and all Nike Fuel users.
This isn’t a great representation of my daily averages, as I may have under performed this week. If I replace my Nike Fuel here with my average to date, will I still under perform against the competition?

Yes, I do. My daily average Nike Fuel is 1,559 compared to 2,200 for the average 18-24 year old male.

The big problem- from a data perspective- with Nike Fuel, is that there is no way to compare specific demographics. Am I under performing in my demographic because I’m being compared to athletes? How do I stack up against other office workers?

This brings us back to the original question, has my activity trended upward since using Nike+ FuelBand, or has it only served as a reminder that I’m not very active?

Unfortunately, my activity hasn’t changed. Throughout everyone at the office, no one has made a life style change to become more active because of the Nike+ FuelBand. It comes back to the fact that if you work in a standard office, you have to be infront of a screen for 8+ hours a day and no little tracking band will change that fact.

However, there are a few small and easy lifestyle changes you can make to be more active during the work day, and to bump up that Nike+ FuelBand score:

1. Have you ever watched the West Wing? Remember how all their meetings happened while walking? Implementing walking meetings can help get your blood flowing during the day.
2. In a similar vein, try having off site meetings that you have to walk to.
3. Don’t go to the coffee shop across the street, instead go to the one 5 blocks away.
4. Install walking desks in your office. They are comfortable, quiet, and a great way to keep working and walking. New York Times best selling Author and YouTuber, John Green, is writing his new book almost entirely from his walking desk.

We are in the very early stages of the wearable tech wave, but hopefully we will start seeing more and more solutions to eliminate sitting from our working lives.

The Four Different Mother’s You’ll See Using Phones

Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Don’t forget to show your appreciation by doing something nice for her. Do any of these sound like your mother?

The iPhone Mom
She has more friends than you on Facebook and more followers on Twitter.
This Mom thinks mommy bloggers are silly, but that’s totally what she is.
She goes to the gym, and could totally kick your ass.
Her phone password is 1234, doesn’t know how to add contacts and still uses abbreviations while texting- a carry over from her feature phone days.
She may not be the most tech savvy mom, but she sure looks cool.

The Android Mom
This tech savvy mom knows more about her phone than you know about Halo. Come to think of it, she probably knows more about Halo than you do.
She can be found at the park watching her favourite episode of Battlestar Galactica, or video chatting with her hubby while having a mocha latte from a hole-in-the-wall coffee joint you’ve never heard of.
She may know how to use Google Wallet, and what Cylons are, but her cookies are terrible.

The Blackberry Mom
She works at a big company, and they’ve given her a blackberry. She thinks she’s witty when she calls it a ‘crackberry’, but she’s not- because blackberries suck.
After many fights with her husband, she never answers her email on the weekends. Every other waking moment, however, is spent tapping away at the physical keyboard that for some reason still exists on her blackberry.
She knows email way better than you do, but is still unsure why you keep changing the Google logo.

The Feature Phone Mom
Its 2013 and she has just learned how to text. She uses abbreviations to shave milliseconds off her day. Unfortunately, it requires you to spend minutes trying to decipher the gibberish she sends you.
She calls you over all the time to fix her computer, which it turns out, is always unplugged. She is the kind of person who unplugs her computer, she says its to save power, but you know the truth- that she doesn’t know how to shut it down properly.

Organize everything in your life with Trello.

Trello is a great tool for organizing your life, and the lives of the people around you. The interface is responsive, intuitive and easy to learn. To me it screams ‘Pinterest for Productivity’. Here’s a demo:

Qwiki turns your photos and videos into beautiful stories.

I’ve always had a ton of photos and videos on my iPhone that just sort of sit there. What Qwiki does is takes your photos and videos, mixes in your music, and turns them into beautiful slideshows that you can share with your friends. It’s the perfect addition if you just returned from a vacation.

Do you have trouble waking up in the morning?

I have a bad case of hitting the snooze button and falling back asleep, that’s why I love Wake n Shake. When your alarm goes off, the only way to shut it off is shaking it for 30 seconds.. To help curb that rude awakening, the app has a cute alarm clock mascot that is active when you are, intuitive controls, red display for easy reading at night and even a gameification system that allows you to compete against your friends. The only downside is you have to have it open all night with your auto-lock off. Definitely a must-download. Here’s a video:

This wonderfully brilliant video pokes the oligopolous bear that is sub par, over priced cable and internet services we are getting. Unless of course you live in Kansas City, in which case the world envies you and your Google Fiber.

Speaking of Google, our leader, Gavin McGarry has been invited to be a Google Glass Explorer.

We are all very excited at Jumpwire HQ, as it means we will all be testing out Google Glass sooner than we had hoped.

Last week we all picked up Nike Fuelbands in the office and have been competing all week for the highest score.

YouTube Releases One Channel Design to the Public

One Channel fluidly brings the channel back into the fold of the YouTube home page. The new channel design works across all devices, features a channel trailer viewable only to non-subscribers and allows any channel to have a channel banner (previously only available to certain partners). YouTubers will rejoice as channel comments have made a return, making engagement with content creators much easier and more direct. Where before the channel was a very separate entity, this move is the first step towards paid channels.

Jumpwire Media HQ Bands Together, Nike+ Style

If you haven’t heard of it, Fuelband is a bracelet that tracks each step taken and calorie burned. The innovative part of Fuelband is that it sets daily goals for you, shows you your progress and allows you to compete and share with your friends. Minuum Flattens the Keyboard

Minuum breaks down the traditional keyboard, and creates a tiny keyboard meant for modern typing. What is even more interesting is that it allows you to type on anything. Minuum boasts potential for typing by writing on your arm, using google glass and even wagging your finger. This Toronto based startup is definitely on our watch list.
